Description
A copy of a typescript reminiscence by William Dale, born in New Plymouth, son of William and Emma Dale, he describes farm life in Egmont Village, the death of his father in a logging accident and how, aged 8yrs, he started work for food and lodging with various employers. He was 14 before he received wages. He describes working as a bushfeller near Fordell and later in the Patea/Kakaramea area, before moving down to Rangatiki. An itinerate labourer, Dale briefly describes jobs, naming the people he worked for or with and the places he went. In 1897, he took up land at Pohakura with his brother, before moving on to try his hand at dairy farming at Matapu. In 1918 he moved to Te Aroha where he farmed and also became involved in local affairs.
