Description
An enthusiastic amateur archaeologist, Dick Purdie Jonas (1911-1996) collected information on various sites in the Urenui, Onaero and Pukearuhe district. His extensive notes include drawings, measurements, locality of finds and archaeological digs, ownership of artefacts, maps and plans and diary type notes of visits to people and places. He collaborated with Alastair Gordon Buist (1920-1999) who wrote "Archaeology in North Taranaki, New Zealand: a study of field monuments in the Pukearuhe-Mimi-Urenui area" (New Zealand Archaeological Association, 1964). Jonas was also an enthusiastic amateur photographer and captured many images of these areas, and people he lived and worked with. Many of his artefacts are housed in Puke Ariki.
Collection also includes information on the Jonas family with an extensive photographic collection including local inhabitants of Urenui, Motunui and Waitoetoe and photographs of oil exploration in the Urenui area.
