Description
James Bellringer was born in Somerset and left England in 1857 on board the ship 'Spirit of Trade'. He settled in Taranaki and served in the 65th Regiment and the Taranaki Bush Rangers. In 1865 he established a business as a painter and decorator and in 1879 was elected a member of the Provincial Council. From 1889-1893 he served as mayor of New Plymouth.
The collection of papers consists of various receipts and accounts from his painting and decorating business. There are also booklets of the Independent Order of Oddfellows of which he was a member for over forty years.
