Description
While serving as Deputy Director of the Taranaki Museum (January 1976 – August 1979) Georgina Christensen, researched, wrote and directed a play based on the exploits of Robert Herman Wallath, also known as the Taranaki Highwayman. The play was produced by The Taranaki Museum, at the Museum 26 - 29 July 1978.
Born in 1884, Robert Wallath spent his childhood in New Plymouth. In 1892, the residents in the town were exposed to the first of a series of robberies carried out by an unidentified masked man, who, clad in assorted military regalia, brandishing sword and pistol staged numerous holdups over a period of 18 months, before he was finally captured.
Wallath's escapades as a Highwayman were inspired by tales of Dick Turpin and ultimately cost his 8 years in prison, three of which were hard labour.
The papers include the script of Christensen's play, The Highwayman, posters, programme and scrapbook from the show.
