Republic of Whangamomona
Republic Day was first celebrated in the town of Whangamomona in 1989 as a result of regional authority boundary changes. Passports were issued to those attending. A train brought visitors from Auckland and others drove the Scenic highway. Festivities included gumboot throwing, possum skinning etc.
