Description
The reminiscence briefly describes John Brass's working life. Born in the Orkney Islands in 1849, Brass landed at Invercargill in 1864. He began working with Angus & Murray, contractors who were working on the railway embankment from Invercargill to Kew. Brass describes various job held including railway fireman and engine driver. He briefly mentions the Engine Drivers and Fireman's Society and negotiations with employers
