Description
The Queen Alexandra's Mounted Rifles began with the formation of the Taranaki Militia and Wanganui Cavalry Volunteers in 1860, and in September 1864 the Alexandra Troops were entered on the Army Lists. The Regiment existed until 1944 when it amalgamated with the Manawatu Mounted Rifles and the Wellington East Coast Mounted Rifles to form the 2nd N.Z. Armoured Regiment based at Palmerston North.
The records comprise a manuscript history (1895-1947) by Lt-Col. B.W.H. Smart, used as a basis for the published history by E.R. Andrews, 'Kiwi Trooper' (1967); files of accounts and correspondence, 1922-40, and records of the 2nd Composite Mounted Rifles Regiment's camps, 1938 and 1939, and manuscript reminiscences of troop members in both world wars (some extracts appear in 'Kiwi Trooper').
