Description
Built by Scottish shipbuilder, Robert Duncan in 1877, the 'Taranaki' was one of the last three ships to be built specifically for the New Zealand emigrant trade.
After many successful voyages, she was scrapped in Genoa in 1915.
The essay gives the background into shipping lines servicing Taranaki (and New Zealand). In 1883, the Shaw Savill and Albion shipping companies merged. It lists ships built for the New Zealand Emigrant trade, including the 'Taranaki' and gives details of some voyages.
