Description
William Smith was born in Ayrshire, Scotland in 1837. In 1857 he emigrated to New Zealand on board the Alpine landing in Otago where he took up cutting bush. During the years up to 1911, he held a great variety of jobs including road construction between Dunedin and Invercargill, fencing, farming and gold prospecting. He finally settled in Auckland, buying property there.
William Smith relates his life story in Reminiscences of a Long and Active Life which covers his voyage to New Zealand on board the ship 'Alpine' and the life he followed in his adopted land.
