Anderson, Mr W. E.

Description
Typescript containing extracts from the journal of William Edward Anderson (1880-1966), an historian from Kawhia. The entries are not in chronological order but reflect on Anderson's life in the early 20th century and appear to be a fragment of the draft manuscript for a document held by the Alexander Turnbull Library.

The journal extracts include descriptions of Mrs Gray, a part Maori storekeeper at Kawhia, her business, family and friends ; the location and naming of the post office at Awaroa ; the ceremony involved in bringing out a newly carved canoe ( waka ) from the bush ; photos reputed to be held at the National Museum ; Hochsteller (possibly Reischek) purchasing 'mummies' from local people and spending the money spent on cattle ; the Taiari family ; collecting fungus ; and the first visit of the fifth Maori king Koroki Te Rata Mahuta Potatau Te Wherowhero.
