Description
Riu, son of English emigrants R T and Emily Batley was born in Moawhango, near Taihape in 1887. After schooling in Wanganui, he took up farming in the Mokau, Awakino and Mahoenui areas. Biographical information on his wife, Rangirere Te Maemae Kapo (Ngati Tama / Ngati Manipoto) is included. Rangirere died in 1943 and Riu in 1960.
Titled A Man From Te Riu o Puanga, Riu Batley, the biographical essay was researched and written by Riu Batley's nephew, Graeme Gummer.
The essay is well supported with footnotes and a section titled Memories about Riu which consists of notes taken during interviews with people who could recall both Riu and Rangirere.
