Born in New Plymouth, Jean Sandel was educated at New Plymouth Girls' High School, being Dux in both 1932 and 1933. She went on to take up medicine and qualified as a surgeon, returning to Taranaki in 1950 where she was later appointed Director of Surgery at New Plymouth Hospital. Jean died in 1974, leaving a large portion of her estate to the Presbyterian Social Service Association.
The papers include her last will and testament, lists of assets and liabilities and other papers relating to her estate and miscellaneous papers as described in the inventory.
