Description
The Taranaki Philharmonic Society was formed in 1867 with the aim of promoting the practice of vocal and instrumental music. This society continued to operate into the 1880's when debts incurred through having to send it's grand piano to England for repairs, meant the society ceased operations in 1888.
In May 1900, a meeting to form a musical society was held and the society named the New Plymouth Philharmonic Society, this society operated through at least to 1907, it is not recorded when this society went into abeyance.
In July 1934 another meeting was held to form a musical society to be known as the Philharmonic Society (New Plymouth), changing it's name in 1956 to New Plymouth Philharmonic Choir, this society was wound up in May 1962.
Included are minutes, rolls, programmes etc from the Taranaki Philharmonic Society and the New Plymouth Philharmonic Choir.
