Description
The letters consist of correspondence to the Des Forges family in England which relates the voyage to New Zealand. They are in the form of a journal, and cover the journey from Gravesend to New Zealand. He notes mainly weather conditions and the ship's position for the duration of the voyage but gives a description of his first two days in New Zealand when he disembarked in Port Chalmers.
Henry Des Forges was born in Lincolnshire in 1830, England. He emigrated to New Plymouth, New Zealand, on board the 'Phoebe Dunbar' in 1850. He settled in the New Plymouth area and was employed as a builder before taking up farming. He died in 1906.
