Hughes, Robert Clinton

Production date
1860-1861
Description
Two diaries written by Robert Clinton Hughes (1847-1935) dated 20 February 1860 to 9 February 1861 and 10 February to 30 June 1861. The diaries were written during the events of the First Taranaki War, while Hughes was attending Beardsworth's School in New Plymouth. The journal entries give an impression of what it was like to live in New Plymouth during this period, with vivid accounts of the overcrowding and disease caused by settlers coming in from outlying areas and families seeking safety at the military barracks on Marsland Hill.
A full transcription of both diaries is available.
