Description
Chilman sailed to New Zealand on the ship William Bryan in 1840 as a clerk to the New Plymouth Company.
Settling at New Plymouth he was appointed Provincial Treasurer in 1853 and in 1871 went to England to obtain capital for the development of ironsands in Taranaki. He also held the posts of Provincial Auditor and Receiver of Land Revenue. He was one of the founders of the New Plymouth Institute.
The journals recount the journey to England to investigate finance for working the ironsands.1870 - 1871
