Description
Mabel Wilson was born in 1884 and moved to the Kohuratahi area in around the turn of the century. From 1909 - 1913 Mabel was sole charge teacher at Marco School before marrying Walter Whitaker in 1917. Over the years, Mabel taught in many schools throughout Taranaki and was renowned as a pianist, accompanying many choirs and congregations. A fuller biographical essay was researched and written by Florinda Lambert and has been published in the Dictionary Of New Zealand Biography Vol 3 1901 - 1920.

1. Mss notes written by Mrs M Whitaker telling the story of her piano which originally belonged to Stratford music teacher Mrs Malone (mother of Colonel Malone) which was purchased by Mabel's father E R W Wilson in the 1880s. 2pp + typescript

2. A sheet of music - musical score and words for a tune "The Town and the Tree" written by Mabel Whittaker. The 'tree' is reputed to be the large and well known rhododendron in the centre of town. 1p

3. Choir Festival programmes for concerts to be held in the Inglewood Town Hall. 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953 at which M Whitaker was an accompanist. 5 items
