Description
Weekes first arrived in New Zealand in 1841, as surgeon to the New Zealand Company, in the 'William Bryan'. He went to California in 1848, returning to New Zealand, 1863-65, to serve in the Land Wars, and went back to England in 1871.
The collection includes Weekes Journal Voyage in the Barque William Bryan from Plymouth to New Zealand, 1840-41. A further four volumes of journals and manuscripts are 'My Island'; the voyage from Plymouth to New Zealand in the 'William Bryan' 1840-41; 'First Establishment of the New Plymouth Colony pioneering etc...' and 'Progress of the Colony at Taranaki'.
