Description
John Newland (1800-1887) recorded daily events during his journey from England to New Plymouth in 1841 on the ship Amelia Thompson and his subsequent settlement in New Plymouth where he was the first policeman.
Newland's diary is one of the few surviving daily accounts of life in New Plymouth prior to the establishment of the local newspapers. The diary begins with an account of the voyage of the ship Amelia Thompson from Plymouth to New Plymouth. W.H. Skinner's transcript has annotations on the births and deaths that occurred during the voyage. Later entries in the diary describe life in New Plymouth, notable amongst these are the building of St. Mary's Anglican Church, the death of William Bolland and incidents that occurred during the Land Wars of the 1860s.
