Mary Hirst arrived with her parents in New Plymouth on the ship Gwalior in 1852. They settled in New Plymouth and Mary married William Devenish on 25 November 1855. Her diary covers a period of three months from October to December 1854 and includes descriptions of daily farming activities including interactions with local Maori.
