Long-Tailed Cuckoo

A long-tailed cuckoo (koekoea) specimen mounted on an oval wooden base. It is perched on a branch that is covered in lichen and moss. The branch is pointing diagonally upwards. A square of silver masking tape is on the back of the base.

It is a summer migrant to New Zealand mainly visiting forest. It is a brood parasite meaning that it lays its eggs in the nest of other smaller birds. The eggs and hatchlings are then looked after the the host species.
