Description
Sheffield-style bowie knife made from Taranaki steel, nickel silver and silver, with a synthetic ivory handle. The blade is engraved with a koru-derived pattern and the top of the guard is engraved with a Maori/Celtic heart-shaped motif. The edge of the guard is decorated with the puwerewere Taranaki Maori carving design; the four pointed star on the handle is Victorian scroll-work and the edge of the handle features 'vine and leaf' filework. It has a curved cutting edge with a bevelled spine.

Local jeweller and gem cutter Andrew MacKinnon has recently experimented with producing steel from Taranaki ironsand. This engraved bowie knife was made by Andrew in 2004 from East End beach sand.
