A gold plated swimming medal . The medal features five crown shaped points framing a circular plaque at the centre. The points are infilled with a decorative flower motif. A set of three eyelets is attached to four of the points from which a ribbon or chain was attached. " West Coast / Championship / 1st / 220 yds / 1906 " is engraved on the front of the medal at the centre." 9 Cv." is stamped onto the reverse of the medal at the top and followed with an abstract animal shape. " Won by / J. Grant " is engraved on the reverse of the medal and decorated with a plant motif.
This swimming medal for first place in the 1906 West Coast 220 yards championship race was won by John Gildroy Grant when he was 17. Grant later served in World War I, earning a Victoria Cross while serving in France.
