This two-piece chest of drawers and writing desk was used by military officers and emigrants for travelling. It is made from two separate sections sitting on top of each other which made it easy to carry and stack during long journeys. The top drawer drops down to become a writing desk. This chest belonged to the Richmond family and was probably used to house their treasures on the long voyage to New Zealand.
