The two chiffonier cabinets in the Richmond’s living room date from the early-to-mid 1800s. They both feature carved decorations on the top edges of the backboards. Victorian chiffoniers tended to take on the characteristics of the Rococo revival with a notable increase in carved ornament and scrollwork around the serpentine-shaped backs. It was a key piece of furniture in many dining rooms.

Ohhh, forgot to add the plinth is completely wrong... Most likely it had turned feet when first made. See patterns by Jenks & Holt (1869) London and G & H Story (1865) London, HPT, Caroline SImpson Library, The Mint, Sydney.

The 'dark wood' is Australian cedar, the self columns are upside down (please do correct that!) and the knobs are recent additions ... otherwise a fine c.1875 colonial chiffonier in the 'French style'.
