The
two
chiffonier
cabinets
in
the
Richmond’s
living
room
date
from
the
early-to-mid
1800s.
They
both
feature
carved
decorations
on
the
top
edges
of
the
backboards.
Victorian
chiffoniers
tended
to
take
on
the
characteristics
of
the
Rococo
revival
with
a
notable
increase
in
carved
ornament
and
scrollwork
around
the
serpentine-shaped
backs.
It
was
a
key
piece
of
furniture
in
many
dining
rooms.

Ohhh, forgot to add the plinth is completely wrong... Most likely it had turned feet when first made. See patterns by Jenks & Holt (1869) London and G & H Story (1865) London, HPT, Caroline SImpson Library, The Mint, Sydney.

The 'dark wood' is Australian cedar, the self columns are upside down (please do correct that!) and the knobs are recent additions ... otherwise a fine c.1875 colonial chiffonier in the 'French style'.
