Bit, Rotary Drill

Description
A 4 and 3/4 inch cadmium plated rotary drill bit which has been converted into a trophy. The area where the toothed wheels attach to the main body have been welded to prevent the bits rotating. A plastic presentation plaque has been adhered with foam tape to the central region. " Drillwell Exploration NZ Ltd " is marked on the black plastic " GNG " stamped into the metal on the flat centres of two of the drilling bits. " HRGF ... 4 3/4 ... 238 ...2 7/8 REG ... 413131 ... [unidentified symbol shaped like a tear drop] " is stamped into the flat end of the drill bit beneath the thread.

Don McLeod won this trophy during a spanner throwing competition at an Oil Drillers conference held at the Bell Block Hotel in 1990-1991. Don was employed by BAIROD at the time, a firm who supplied lubricating drilling mud to the oil industry. He used his trophy as a doorstop and left it with his mother when he moved to Australia.
