Kokako, North Island

Description
A North Island kokako ( Callao cinerea) mounted on a thick branch which is attached to a black piece of wood. Perched position with wings and bill closed. Dark brown and grey colourings with blue distinctive tabs protruding out from the cheeks.

This species is highly endangered through out New Zealand. It is endemic, meaning it is only found in this country. Introduced pest such as possums, cats, stoats and rats threaten kokako populations. There is currently a lot of conservation work being carried out trying to save this bird from extinction and reintroducing it to some of its previous habitat, including Taranaki.
