Duck, Blue / Whio
A Blue Duck / Whio (Hymenolaimus malacorhynchos) mounted on a large grey, rounded piece of stone. Standing position with wings closed. It is predominantly grey in colouring with a dappled chestnut breast. The tip of the bill is black and the remainder is yellow.
The blue duck inhabits fresh streams in forested catchments. The rivers tend to fast-flowing in the upper parts of the rivers. They are under threat and are rare. There is some considerable conservation efforts in protecting and re-establishing populations of blue duck including in Taranaki.
