This sweetheart brooch was given to an English woman by a New Zealand soldier during World War I. The family history related about it is that the New Zealand solider had proposed to his sweetheart, but she had refused as she did not feel she could leave her widowed mother. It remained in England until it was donated to Puke Ariki in 2002.
