Description
A French Medaille Militaire. The medal is is circular and the edges are rimmed with oak leaf designs. A small breast plate motif with an assortment of weapons attached to the sides is attached with a hinge to the top of the medal. This in turn is attached to a yellow and green corded ribbon with a ring. The obverse side of the medal bears side profile of a women's face which is surrounded by a blue enamelled circle within which is the following text: "REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE * 1870 *". The following text is on the reverse: "VALEUR ET DISCIPLINE". This too was surrounded by a blue enamelled circle but only a tiny trace of enamel remains."T.W.H." is engraved on the rear of the breast plate.
