Banded Rail (Rallus philippensis). Top of head dark brown. Chestnut band through eye to back of head; white streak above. Chin whitish. Throat and upper breast pale grey. Broad chestnut band across centre of breast; rest of undersurface striped black and white. Undertail stripped reddish brown and black. Back and top of wing brown, spotted with black and white; underwing paler. Unmounted with wings closed, legs together and neck stretched horizontally. In fairly good condition.

The banded rail is native to New Zealand but the species is in decline. They are restricted to mangroves and saltmarshes in the upper North Island with a small population around Nelson and Marlborough. The drainage of wetlands inland have contributed to the species decline.
