Wrapper, Butter (Taranaki)

Description
Taranaki butter wrapper for a 500g block of butter. Plain sheet of paper measuring 28 x 19.4 cm. Label is blue and green and reads: "BUTTER UNSALTED PACKED FOR THE NEW ZEALAND DAIRY BOARD 100% NEW ZEALAND BUTTER NET WEIGHT 500G PURE CREAMERY BUTTER". An image of a woman seated on a milking stool hand milking a cow accompanies the text. This text appears in three places but at the lower edge of the page there is a barcode with the following text next to it : "PACKED BY MOA-NUI CO-OP DAIRIES LTD INGLEWOOD." There is also an evenly spaced series of vertical lines which are divided into 50g lots (used to measure quantity of butter for baking etc.) Unknown maker. In quite poor condition. Wrapper is discoloured in places - this is due to the item being wrapped around a block of wood and being exposed to light. Was originally a display prop - intended to replicate a block of butter.

Taranaki is renowned for its excellent land for dairying, due to its temperate climate and high rainfall. The first dairy factories were opened in Taranaki and Waikato in the 1880s, and at this early stage the most successful factories produced both butter and cheese. In 2008 butter remained New Zealand's third most important dairy export.
