Description
A sterling silver trophy cup awarded to Chew Chong for best export butter at the South Seas Exhibition, 1889. The cup is goblet shaped with a thin stem and a round base which rests on a raised and turned circular wooden base. The wooden base has a groove around the outside edge which may have been designed to fit a glass dome. " NEW ZEALAND / SOUTH SEAS EXHIBITION / Dunedin 1889-90 / PRESENTED / BY / MESSRS A & T BURT / DUNEDIN " is engraved on one side of the cup. This text is surrounded by an ornate and intricately engraved floral design. " AWARDED / TO / MR CHEW CHONG / Jubilee Dairy Factory / ELTHAM NEW PLYMOUTH / FOR / the best half ton / EXPORT BUTTER / packed suitable for export ". " GMJ " and four hallmarks are stamped onto this side near the lip as well. " 1103 / 580 " and " 5-16-0 / n.p / d. ca . g " are very lightly scratched on the underside of the silver base. The cup is not attached to the wooden base.
