Male California Quail (Lophortyx californica brunnescens). Game bird. Back slate brown. Short black plume curving forward from crown. Large black patch on face and throat, surrounded by white. Breast blue grey. Underside pale buff with black marginal feathers giving scaly pattern. White bars on flanks. Iris dark brown. Bill short black. In good condition. Mounted on a piece of white foam core.
They were introduced into NZ as a game bird in 1862. They are common in some parts of the country while being absent in other parts.
