Credit line
Red-crowned parakeets are endemic to NZ and have three subspecies. They are rare on the mainland but can be common on some offshore islands where they benefit from pest control. The parrots hybridise threatening the integrity of the native gene pool. There is now a ban on any captive stock to be released as wild translocation.
