Nankeen Night Heron (Nycticorax caledonicus). Short necked heron. Crown and nape black. Back and wings chestnut red. Under face white. On side of neck chestnut and white blended.

sub-species
and
is
only
found
along
the
whanganui
river.
It
is
a
recent
coloniser
being
seen
as
a
rare
vagrant
from
1845
but
noticed
in
the
early
1990s
along
the
Whanganui
river
and
breeding.
