Fossil, Oyster

Description
Single fossilised oyster shell - Crassostrea ingens. Large, amorphous, scaly, laminate shell. Thick elongated form. Has "Mr R.G. Fairweather / PATEA / 11/11/1969" handwritten in black ink on the inside surface (near the outside edge). Measures 22cm long; 12cm wide and 7cm thick (at the hinge). Late Miocene to Late Pliocene period. A fairly good example.
