Puffinus griseus. A sooty shearwater with a blackish brown upper surface . The tail wing primaries and secondaries are black. Under surface greyish brown. The bill is slate brown. It is mounted on a rectangular piece of rough timber - wings are closed and it is seated slightly with its webbed feet at the front.

Sooty shearwater is a dark coloured bird that spends a lot of time at sea. They feed on crustaceans by flying into the water. They can be seen around the coast and sometimes in flocks of tens of thousands. They were harvested around stewart Island by the descendants of the Rakiura Maori.
