Description
A large framed sampler that traces the genealogical record of the Frank family from John and Martha Cope who were married on December 1, 1796. The main body of sampler consists of two embroidered vertical columns one headed "Births"; the other headed "Deaths". Above the columns the following is embroidered "Father born ? ? ? 1774 / John & Martha Cope Married Dec 1 1796".Embroidered in the "Births" column is the following:
"John son of the above Born Dec 18 1879"
"Samuel & Ann son and daughter of the above Born ? 29 1799 Samuel ? o clock Ann at 2 Wednesday morning."
"Joseph son of the above Born Novr 23rd Monday morning 8 o clock"
Samuel son of the above Born ? 17 1803 Mond morning ? past 4 o clock"

The following text is embroidered in the deaths column - each of the names in the "Deaths" corresponds with the names in the "Births". Note: there is no death recorded for Joseph (B. 1801), Samuel (B. 1803), Sarah (B. 1808)?, Hannah (B. ?) or the last name recorded on the list.

A poem embroidered at the base of the sampler below the columns reads: "There was the parting sighs / with that the spirits fled / And winged its flight on high / And left the body dead stay / no prayers no tears its flight could / Twas Jesus calld the soul away / Hannah Cope 1828".
Embroidered floral motifs decorate the outside edge of the sampler in pink, green, purple and orange.
Framed in an oak frame with glass cover. Typed text adhered to the reverse reads "Hannah Cope was born in Birmingham, England in 1816, the tenth child of John & Martha Cope. The sampler traces the genealogical history of the family from the wedding of the parents in 1796 to the time of the death of Martha in 1829, aged 57 years. As far as can be reasonably ascertained it was brought to Taranaki by either the son or the daughter of Hannah Cope and passed through the family of William and Mary Dale to their grand daughter, Clara Emily Davey (nee Frank). From there it passed to Colin Lester Davey, her son and on the celebration of the one hundredth birthday of Clara it was deposited in the archives of the Taranaki Museum so that it was not lost trace of in the expanding generations to follow. Although by now fragile, it has been recently preserved behind glass on acid-free mounting and should last as a useful genealogical record for future generations. Three other of Clara Davey's siblings were centenarians and one Earnest Melville Frank has written the history of the Frank Family "Interludes from Pioneering Days of the Frank Family & Experiences of Earnest Melville Frank." The brief background statement tracing the origin of the sampler was produced on a Macintosh SE/computer (so highly regarded ten years ago but for most purposes now obsolete) in early October 2001 two weeks after the tragedy of the sabotage of the New York Twin Towers on Sept 11th 2001."
