Description
A 1/2 inch five chain steel band which is marked at each chain. The 6mm wide steel band is wound around a black metal wheel. It has a small brass handle on one side and a rectangular metal hand grip on the other for rewinding. There is a short length of grubby and greasy linen cloth attached to one end of band. " OFFICIAL / 5 Chain Std band No. 4 / CHIEF SURVEYOR, NEW PLYMOUTH / Handle with care. / For comparison with standard see Records / of Surveys of N.Z. Vol 1 Pge 7 " is written on a paper label attached to the band. Two lengths of chain with wing nuts attached are included in box. It is contained in a rough wooden crate.

This band was issued to the New Plymouth District of the Department of Lands and Survey on 7 September 1905. It was used by departmental and private surveyors to calibrate their own bands.
