Description
A silver coloured metal opisometer with a detachable ivory handle. Contained in a small rectangular hinged case. " Carrington / (Private property) " is handwritten in faded sepia ink on a paper label stuck to the front of the lid. " 1.3 chains in every 100 chains " is handwritten in black on a strip of adhesive label tape. "a grade of 1 in 10 only makes a difference of 1/2 % in 0.5 miles in 100 miles" and "0.2% is sufficient to allow ?????? for surface distance" is handwritten on two labels inside. " W. Littlejohn & Son / Lambton Quay / Wellington " is marked in gold coloured text below the labels.The chartometer has a chrome body with a white enamel face and a blue steel hand. " Inches to Miles or Verstes. / Centimetres to Kilometres / Registered No. 44851 " is written in black on the face. There is also a motif which appears to be in the shape of a building stamped below the dial. " Carrington / 1887 " is scratched on the back. The box is covered in brown book linen and lined with faded red fabric. There are depressions to hold the opisometer and handle in the base of the box and a small push-button release.
