Mary Ann Prout

Production date
Circa 1854-1870s
Description
Hand tinted ambrotype portrait of Mary Ann Proust, wife of John Proust. She is seated in an upholstered chair and has one arm resting on a table covered with a patterned cloth. A book also rests on the table. A curtain is pulled to the side in the background. Proust is wearing a formal dress with a lace collar and cuffs. She is wearing a bonnet with long ribbons that drape down her chest. The brooch at her neck is tinted gold, as are the rings on the hand that rests in her lap. Her cheeks and hands are tinted light pink and the table cloth is tinted green and pink. The portrait is not matted or housed in a case. The black lacquer on the rear of the glass plate has only been painted up to Mrs Proust's neck, turning the upper portion of the image negative when it is not held against something black (see second image).
