Description
Oil on wood portrait in a painted circular frame of Mary Hirst who married William Devenish in 1855. She is dressed in a dark gown with a red ribbon round her neck (ribbon fixed at front with a small gold brooch) and has dark brown hair. Trees, sky and Cupid statuette behind her. Handwritten in pencil on the rear: "Painted on the "Gwalior" by the Purser on the "Gwalior". Above this is handwritten in pen: "Painted on board ship by the purser. At the top middle rear, also handwritten in pencil is: "Mary Hirst / Nee Devenish".
