Description
A rectangular piece of cotton fabric printed in black ink with by-laws for the Taranaki Botanic Garden that were issued in 1895. " BY-LAWS / OF / Taranaki Botanic Garden Board / NEW PLYMOUTH ". The 25 by-laws are listed in two columns and include opening hours and a detailed list of prohibitions. Some notable prohibitions include firearms, explosives, catapults or the throwing of sticks and stones. The by-laws prohibit meetings or picnics, sport or games without written permission and state that no " disorderly persons, vagrants or persons of bad repute shall be allowed within the limits of the gardens." All vehicles apart from "water chairs" and prams are also banned. Horses, donkeys, sheep, goats and cattle are all forbidden and as is obscene or profane language. Manners are also covered by the by-laws. " No person will behave riotously or boisterously within the garden so as to annoy others, or shall call or whistle after any person in a manner calculated to annoy other persons," one reads.
The document is dated 25th March, 1895 in the top left-hand corner.
