Taranaki Bitter Ale has a long history in the Taranaki region. It was first brewed at the Egmont Brewery in 1863, in the spot where the TSB Showplace now stands. After a number of mergers and sales, the brewery was renamed Taranaki Brewery and Cordials Ltd 1927, with the cordials being dropped off the menu in 1959. After merging with Dominion Breweries in 1969, Taranaki Bitter Ale was eventually replaced by Taranaki Draught in 1994. However, all was not lost - in 2012, a limited run of this local favourite was released, with approximately 82,000 cans on sale. As DB retail general manager John Meiklejohn says, "If you have an affinity with Taranaki then you should have an affinity with the beer." Cheers!
