Though the melodica is blown, it has a keyboard similar to that of a piano, making it a cheap way to learn keyboard skills without having to buy a piano. Before the advent of cheap electronic keyboards, the melodica was an inexpensive and popular school music instrument, found in most New Zealand classrooms.
