Crest, H.M.S. Niger (1859-61)

Description
Small (11.2 x 7.5cm) crest of the H.M.S. Niger - ink and watercolour sketch on card. Depicts a heron holding a halberd with one foot. Below bird is the text (in black ink): "Ne Cede Malis. Hic Niger Est. Crest of H.M.S. Niger 1859-61". Written on back in sepia ink is: "Crest after late Captain Cracroft R.N. who commanded H.M.S. Niger during the New Zealand War of 1859-61. This crest was carried on the stern of H.M.S. Niger at the period of her commission and also the words Hic Niger Est on a scroll below". Following this is additional handwritten text (in pencil): "The above note is by Garriot (?) a midshipsman on the "Niger" and present at Waireka - WHS [William Skinner]. In good condition.
