Description
A British War Medal. The obverse features an uncrowned left facing portrait of King George V. " GEORGIVS V BRITT: OMN: REX ET IND: IMP " is marked around the profile. The reverse features a St George figure on horseback which is trampling a shield representing the Central Powers and a skull and crossbones. A sun is in the background. " 1914 1918 " is marked around the edge of this scene. The medal is attached to a watered blue white and red ribbon by a simple suspension bar. This ribbon is from a 1914-15 Star medal. " 22/188 / SISTER M.E. AFFLECK. N.Z.E.F. " is marked around the outside edge. The medal is mounted with the reverse showing on a piece of card along with A Certificate of The Services in the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces issued to Mary Ellen Affleck.

This medal was awarded to Mary Ellen Affleck, a daughter of Robert and Jessie Affleck, of Opunake. Mary trained as a nurse and embarked as a nurse with the New Zealand Army Nursing Service Corps during World War I. She served in the New Zealand General Hospital in Cairo, Egypt and in the General Hospital in Brockenhurst, England. She also appears to have served on hospital transport ships.
