" PRESENTED BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES " is marked around this. " E PLUR [BI] S UNUM " (out of many, one) is marked on the bar. " JAMES F / MARTIN / QUARTERMASTER OF THE / BRITISH S.S. "FIFESHIRE" / FOR HIS HEROIC SERVICES IN / EFFECTING THE RESCUE OF / THE CAPTAIN AND CREW / OF THE AMERICAN SHIP "PATRICIAN" AT SEA / AUGUST 28 -1896. " is marked on the reverse.

James Lent Martin was awarded this medal for his part in the rescue of the crew of the American clipper Patrician on 28 August 1896. He was the quartermaster of the ss Fifeshire that rescued the crew of the Patrician which was carrying a load of coal from Newcastle to Lyttelton and was foundering in heavy seas. An account of his acceptance of this presidential award was published in the Otago Daily Times on 17 December 1897 p.4. James Lent Martin was awarded this medal, issued by the maritime insurers Lloyd's, for his part in the rescue of the crew of the American clipper Patrician on 28 August 1896. He was the quartermaster of the ss Fifeshire that rescued the crew of the Patrician which was carrying a load of coal from Newcastle to Lyttelton and was foundering in heavy seas.
