A thin calcareous false shell of the paper nautilus (Argonauta nodosa) . The shell is an opaque white colour with parts stained dark brown, The whole shell is covered with radiating rows of low tubercles.
This egg protecting shell was made by a female paper nautilus octopus. Paper nautilus live in the tropics but ocean currents sometimes carry them to New Zealand where they can become stranded in the shallows.
